Congratulations to Juliette Aminian Biquet and all co-authors on the publication of their article in the One Earth journal, titled “Over 80% of the European Union’s marine protected areas only marginally regulate human activities.” This article sheds light on the EU’s efforts and challenges in marine protection. We are particularly proud of Jennifer Sletten and Timothe Vincent from the ProtectedSeas team for their role in assisting the researchers and co-authoring the article.
Some highlights from the article include:
- The evaluation of the protection levels of 4,858 EU MPAs using the MPA Guide.
- 86% of MPA area had low protection or were incompatible with conservation standards.
- Protection was minimal across various European Union member states, regions, and MPA features.
Navigator’s data on human activity regulations in marine protected areas in the European Union helped measure levels of fishing protection and identify gaps in protection in European MPAs.
